Vlc Osx 10.6

I've had some difficulty getting the Python bindings to VLC operating on Mac OSX 10.6 but finally found a workaround. The difficulty is that when operating on a Mac, the bindings will only operate properly using a 32 bit Python. On Mac OS 10.6 the default Python is version 2.6.1 which operates as a 64 bit python by default. This leads to a variety of errors depending on the circumstances but generally you will get vlc.py reporting 'image not found'.

VLC media player requires Mac OS X 10.6 or later. It runs on any 64bit Intel-based Mac. Previous devices are supported by older releases. Note that the first generation of Intel-based Macs equipped with Core Solo or Core Duo processors is no longer supported.

VLC media player is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg, etc) as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It can also be used as a server to stream in unicast or multicast in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network. The workaround is to force Python 2.6.1 to 32 bit architecture. This can be done on a temporary basis with the commands:

or

You can also make the change semi-permanent with the command:

(both of these pages are from the OSX man page for Python). The vlc.py bindings will then operate correctly with the universal executable and the 32 bit executable which are available from the main download page for Macs.

I'd like to include this information on the main wiki page as it took me a couple of days to work it out. As to the larger question of getting vlc.py operating with a 64 bit Python, I'm currently clueless as I haven't been able to get a build operating yet. I do know there's no inherent problem with 64 bit python and ctypes as I've written my own library and loaded it.

Excellent multimedia player supporting next to all formats

Older versions of VLC Media Player

It's not uncommon for the latest version of an app to cause problems when installed on older smartphones. Sometimes newer versions of apps may not work with your device due to system incompatibilities. Until the app developer has fixed the problem, try using an older version of the app. If you need a rollback of VLC Media Player, check out the app's version history on Uptodown. It includes all the file versions available to download off Uptodown for that app. Download rollbacks of VLC Media Player for Mac. Any version of VLC Media Player distributed on Uptodown is completely virus-free and free to download at no cost.
